This is a great paper - well reasoned and informative, unlike the web sites of so many other advocacy organizations, even though I agree with them.

I'm interested in finding out if any controlled studies have been done to determine the factors contributing to the increased risk associated with bike lanes and/or trails. It is counter-intuitive to me that they should be more dangerous, although I can see that if many more inexperienced cyclists use them, they may appear so, at least statistically.

Thank you for posting this article, and for the site in general. I think this paper is the very best summary I have ever read of the problems we face. But an additional challenge just occurred to me that is not in the paper, and I would think that it should be: The perception (in the United States) of bicycling as only a recreational activity, not a transportational one. This obviously feeds into the question you address in Section 1.3, "Are Bicyclists Legal Road Users?", because many motorists would answer no because of their perception of the bicycle as only recreation, and bicyclists only as lycra-clad road warriors out practicing a hobby. It would be nice to see that contributing attitute mentioned explicitly in this paper. Overall, though, excellent job!!

Thank you so much for succinctly stating what advocates have been discussing with more or less success for years. I believe the bicycle is "The Fountain of Youth" and work every day on skills training, education and compliance with traffic laws so we can ride now, not wait for the perfect bicycle facilities. I hope more cyclists will take the responsibility to claim the lane and ride safely and competently.

God bless you, Mr. Schimek. I'm not a cyclist, just an often worried and frightened motorist. Here in rural New Hampshire, I see recreational cyclists commit potentially lethal mistakes with increasing frequency. And with gas prices rising the number of untrained, commuting cyclists has risen, too. Motorists simply don't know how to behave around them.

Please send me a copy of Bicyclist Injuries in the U.S. You bring much-needed objectivity to this issue. Thank you.
